Small kitchen, big upgrade: inside our luxury kitchen expansion for a 5BHK villa in Murooj Al Furjan

Most people think a kitchen upgrade is all about fancy appliances, shiny surfaces, and a few well-placed cabinets. But in Dubai, especially in family-oriented communities like Murooj Al Furjan, the kitchen is the heart of the home. It sets the tone for gatherings, weekday routines, and those late-night snack runs the kids pretend you don’t notice.

So when the owners of a 5BHK villa approached us with one request:
“We want a kitchen that feels bigger, brighter, and easier to live in”, we knew we weren’t just renovating a room. We were reshaping how the home functioned.

This is the story of how a small, boxed-in kitchen became a warm, airy, highly functional space designed for real life, without losing the refined elegance the villa deserved.

Understanding the problem: a kitchen that felt enclosed, dark, and disconnected

Kitchens in many new Dubai villas follow the same pattern: usable, but not optimized. The original layout in this home had three major issues:

  • Limited natural light, thanks to a dense layout and bulky cabinets
  • A narrow work zone, making everyday movement feel cramped
  • Poor connection to the living and dining areas, isolating whoever was cooking

The challenge wasn’t size. It was flow.

And that’s where thoughtful interior design makes the biggest difference, not by adding more things, but by designing better around the space that already exists.

Step 1: Civil modifications that changed everything

Before we even thought about materials or finishes, we focused on structural clarity. The client wanted a kitchen that finally felt like part of the home, not a separate service zone.

So we began with:

• Reworking the layout

We reimagined how the family naturally moved throughout the house, from entryway to living room to kitchen — and adjusted the kitchen zoning to match that flow. This included repositioning work counters, expanding functional space, and revisiting appliance placement to minimize clutter.

• Softening boundaries

By modifying certain partitions, the kitchen instantly felt more breathable. We didn’t create a fully open kitchen (the client preferred privacy), but the redesigned entry and adjusted walls introduced light, movement, and airiness without sacrificing functionality.

• Improving utility spaces

Laundry and back-of-house zones were reorganized for ease and efficiency, small changes that have a huge impact on day-to-day living.

These civil adjustments created the foundation for everything that came next.

Step 2: Designing for warmth, function, and everyday life

Once the structure was right, we moved into what 24 West does best: shaping spaces that feel warm, refined, and intentionally planned.

Neutral tones with layered depth

To brighten the room and create a calming experience, we chose a warm neutral palette built around:

  • soft creams
  • light oak tones
  • textured accents
  • matte finishes that feel elegant without being loud

This created a cohesive backdrop that worked beautifully with the villa’s surrounding interiors.

Custom joinery crafted for real families

Custom cabinetry was designed from scratch, no off-the-shelf shortcuts. The joinery featured:

  • optimized internal storage, so everything had a place
  • child-friendly finishes, durable but stylish
  • hidden organization systems, reducing countertop clutter
  • easy-to-clean surfaces, because families need practicality

The goal wasn’t just beauty. It was ease of living.

Step 3: Bespoke furniture and curated materials

A kitchen becomes truly elevated when the materials feel tactile and intentional. For AM Villa, the client wanted a space that felt warm but modern, refined but welcoming, contemporary but not cold.

We incorporated:

1. Fluted paneling

A subtle detail that adds depth, sophistication, and visual rhythm. Perfect for tying the kitchen into the aesthetic used throughout the home.

2. Neolith sintered stone

Chosen for its durability and luxury appeal, Neolith allowed us to blend beauty with functionality — resistant to stains, heat, scratches, and family life.

3. Rattan shutters

This natural texture brought softness and a touch of organic warmth, balancing the sleek stones and joinery.

4. Elegant arches

Curved lines softened the geometry of the space and echoed a design language seen across the villa.

Every material told a story. Every texture was selected with meaning.

Step 4: Light — the secret ingredient that made the kitchen feel bigger

You can redesign walls, flooring, and cabinetry, but without the right lighting plan, a kitchen will always fall short.

For this villa, we layered:

• Ambient lighting

Soft ceiling lighting that created a warm, even glow.

• Task lighting

Under-cabinet systems brightened workspaces without adding shadows.

• Accent lighting

Subtle highlights added depth to joinery, shelving, and key surfaces.

The result was a kitchen that not only looked brighter, it felt bigger.

Step 5: The flooring that tied everything together

Across the entire villa, we used oak-finish herringbone parquet, and the kitchen was no exception.

This decision had two powerful effects:

  • It visually connected the kitchen with the surrounding living spaces.
  • It added warmth and elegance that made the kitchen feel less “service area,” more “living space.”

That continuity elevated the entire ground floor.

Step 6: Making it truly theirs — child- and pet-friendly by design

Families shouldn’t have to choose between design and durability.

So we selected:

  • easy-clean fabrics
  • scratch-resistant stones
  • fingerprint-resistant finishes
  • rounded edges in key zones
  • soft-close everything

The client specifically requested a space where kids and pets could move freely — and the design fully supports that lifestyle.

The final transformation: a kitchen that feels spacious, cohesive, and inviting

The finished kitchen is warm yet modern, open yet functional, elegant yet family-friendly. It blends seamlessly with the villa’s design language and reflects how the family actually lives.

What started as a small, enclosed kitchen became a bright, welcoming heart of the home, a space where the family can cook, gather, entertain, and spend time together naturally.

This project wasn’t about creating a show kitchen.
It was about creating a home kitchen, one that supports real life while still looking beautifully designed.

And that balance is exactly what 24 West is known for.
